Where does Ganesh go?

Every child asks the same two questions, and most adults fumble both: why does he have an elephant's head, and why are we putting him in the water?

Ganesh Chaturthi welcomes Ganesha into the home for a few days. At the end, the clay idol is immersed in water — visarjan — and dissolves. He is the remover of obstacles, and he is a god children take to instantly, because he looks like nobody else.

The commonest mistake is telling a four-year-old the version written for a nine-year-old, then wondering why they wandered off.

What to say to a 3–5 year old

"He is coming to stay with us for a few days, like a visitor." Keep the ending vague. Small children are not ready for a goodbye they did not ask for.

What to say to a 6–8 year old

This is the age to be honest about visarjan, gently: he returns to the water so he can come back next year. Children handle cycles far better than they handle disappearance.

What to say to a 9–12 year old

The elephant head story involves Shiva beheading his own son. Told plainly it is frightening; told as a story about a father's terrible mistake and how he mended it, it becomes something else entirely — and older children respect being told the difficult version.

Doing it with small children

Three things that actually work.

Choose a clay idol rather than plaster. It dissolves, which is the point, and you can explain why you chose it.
Let the child place the modak. Ownership of one small job is worth more than watching ten.
At visarjan, say "see you next year" out loud. It turns an ending into an appointment.
